Old & New Testament Prophecies: Fulfilled and Yet to Come
The Holy Bible is full of prophecies, some fulfilled dramatically in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, others still awaiting their ultimate fulfillment. When you are reading this consider whether the verse are from the Old or New Testaments because this will reveal what was written in the beginning.
Fulfilled Prophecies:
The Messiah’s Birth in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2): Matthew’s gospel connects Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem with this Old Testament prophecy, highlighting the fulfillment of scripture.
Jesus’ Suffering and Death (Isaiah 53): A picture of a suffering servant, strikingly mirrored in the accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion. The details of his betrayal, silent suffering, and sacrificial death in this ancient prophecy.
Jesus’ Resurrection (Psalm 16:10): Peter, in Acts 2, quotes Psalm 16:10, applying it to Jesus’ resurrection, demonstrating the fulfillment of messianic hope in the face of death.
Jesus’ Ascension into Heaven (Acts 1:9-11): After His resurrection He ascended to heaven before returning.
The Spread of the Gospel (Isaiah 49:6): The rapid expansion of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire, despite intense persecution, speaks to the fulfillment of this prophecy about the global reach of the Messiah’s message.
Jesus’ Ministry and Miracles (Isaiah 35:5-6, 61:1-2): This detail Jesus’ ministry, including healing the sick, casting out demons, and preaching the good news. These events align with prophecies about the Messiah’s actions.
Jesus’ Entry into Jerusalem (Zechariah 9:9): Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a donkey fulfilled this prophecy, demonstrating humility and fulfilling messianic expectations.
The Betrayal by Judas (Psalm 41:9): The betrayal of Jesus by one of his closest followers was foretold in the Old Testament.
The Casting of Lots for Jesus’ Garments (Psalm 22:18): The soldiers casting lots for Jesus’ clothing during the crucifixion fulfilled another specific prophecy.
The Destruction of Jerusalem (Matthew 24)
Jesus’ Lineage (Genesis 49:10, Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5-6): The New Testament meticulously traces Jesus’ ancestry, demonstrating his fulfillment of prophecies about the Messiah’s lineage, particularly his descent from King David. This was crucial in establishing his claim to the throne.
The Specific Time of Jesus’ Ministry (Daniel 9:24-27): Some scholars interpret Daniel’s prophecy as predicting the approximate time of the Messiah’s arrival, ministry, and death, adding another layer of detail to the fulfillment of prophecy.
The Destruction of the Temple (Matthew 24:2, Luke 21:6): While Jesus prophesied the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, it was fulfilled in 70 AD, confirming his divine insight.
The Restoration of Israel (Ezekiel 37, Romans 11): The prophecies concerning the regathering of the Jewish people to their ancestral land, which occurred in 1948, and their spiritual restoration which is still to come.
Unfulfilled Prophecies:
The Second Coming of Christ (Matthew 24): This prophecy speaks of a future return of Jesus, marked by significant global events and the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth. The timing remains a mystery, a source of both anticipation and theological debate.
The Millennial Reign (Revelation 20): This prophecy describes a thousand-year reign of Christ on earth, a period of peace and justice before the final judgment. The exact nature and timing of this reign are subjects of diverse interpretations.
The Final Judgment (Matthew 25): This prophecy depicts a final judgment where all people will be judged according to their deeds, a pivotal event concluding the age and ushering in eternity.
The New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21): This prophecy describes a transformed creation, a perfect world free from sin and suffering, the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise of restoration and redemption.
The Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17): This prophecy speaks of believers being “caught up” to meet the Lord in the air, a much-debated event preceding or coinciding with the Second Coming.
The Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3-12, Revelation 13): This prophecy describes a future leader who will oppose Christ and deceive many. The Antichrist’s identity and actions are subjects of ongoing interpretation.
The Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21, Revelation 7:14): This prophecy describes a period of intense suffering and persecution before the Second Coming.
The Battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16:16): This prophecy describes a final battle between the forces of good and evil at a place called Armageddon.
The Final Resurrection and Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15): This prophecy describes the resurrection of all people, followed by a final judgment based on their deeds.
The New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2): This prophecy describes the ultimate dwelling place of God and his people, a city of unimaginable beauty and perfection.
The Great Apostasy (2 Thessalonians 2:3): This prophecy describes a widespread falling away from the faith before the Second Coming, a time of deception and false teachings.
The Seven Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls (Revelation 6-16): The Book of Revelation contains a series of symbolic judgments, including the opening of the seven seals, the sounding of the seven trumpets, and the pouring out of the seven bowls of God’s wrath. These events are believed to be part of the Tribulation period.
The Binding of Satan (Revelation 20:1-3): This prophecy describes the binding of Satan for a thousand years, a period of peace and righteousness.
The prophecies of the Old and New Testaments, both fulfilled and unfulfilled, form a powerful narrative of God’s plan for humanity. The fulfilled prophecies serve as a testament to the reliability of Scripture, while the unfulfilled prophecies ignite a sense of anticipation and hope for the future.
