The Christian need for reconciliation is fundamental and deep.
As Christians, we often speak of reconciliation as a central tenet of our faith. But what does it truly mean to be reconciled, and why is it so essential to our relationship with God and each other?
The Need for Reconciliation with God
At the heart of Christianity lies the belief that humanity has fallen out of harmony with God. Through sin, we have separated ourselves from our Creator, leading to a deep-seated need for reconciliation. This need is rooted in our desire to restore our relationship with God, to be forgiven, and to experience the love and grace that only He can provide.
The Need for Reconciliation with Each Other
Just as we need reconciliation with God, we also need reconciliation with each other. Our relationships with others are often marked by conflict, hurt, and division, and reconciliation with each other allows us to:
Heal from past wounds
Restore trust and understanding
Experience the unity and love that Jesus prayed for in John 17:21-23
Why Reconciliation is Fundamental to Christianity
Reconciliation is fundamental to Christianity because it:
Reflects God’s character: God is a God of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-20)
Fulfills Jesus’ mission: Jesus came to reconcile us to God and to each other (Matthew 5:23-24, Ephesians 2:14-16)
Empowers our witness: Reconciliation demonstrates the transformative power of the Gospel to a watching world (John 13:34-35)
How Do We Experience Reconciliation?
Experiencing reconciliation requires:
Acknowledging our sin and need for forgiveness
Seeking forgiveness from God and others
Extending forgiveness to those who have hurt us
Cultivating empathy, understanding, and love for others
Reconciliation is the heartbeat of Christianity. It is the means by which we restore our relationship with God and each other, experiencing the love, forgiveness, and unity that Jesus died to give us. As we seek reconciliation, may we reflect the character of God our Creator, fulfill Jesus’ mission, and demonstrate the transformative power of the Gospel to a world in serious need of reconciliation.
Have you forgiven someone in your family or friend, and have you reconciled with them to start a new chapter in your lives? Perhaps now it the time to fix broken relationship and understand that forgiveness and reconciliation show strength through Jesus Christ.
But, pride can very easily cause you to not forgive, and pride is a sin as told in the scriptures in Proverbs 8:13. Remember, that the Lord sees only your heart, so you can’t hide your heart from God as in 1 Samuel 16:7.
There will be a time when it will be too late to forgive and reconcile. Now it the time.
